The immune system is something most of us learned about it in our elementary education, and we know that it fights off infections and colds. But most people don’t know about the endocannabinoid system as this system is a much newer discovery. Scientists are still discovering what and how it affects the body. CBD and THC are cannabinoids that do affect the endocannabinoid system. This interaction and how it affects different components of the body is what researchers are trying to understand.
The scientific findings so far so that we know about the endocannabinoid and immune systems is that as the endocannabinoid system is tasked with finding, isolating and eliminating harmful viruses bacteria and germs in our body. It also flushes away dead or dying cells to keep the body clean. The endocannabinoid system is now thought to be a homeopathic regulator. It is always working to maintain a healthy balance in the body.
One of the significant components of the endocannabinoid system is the receptors which can be found in white blood cells that make up a large portion of our immune system. They directly affect the immune cells through these receptors. This seems to play a role as an immunosuppressant, meaning that it will have an anti-inflammatory effect and therefore be therapeutic in applications dealing with autoimmune and degenerative diseases.
There are various different diseases that affect the immune system, and clinical research has been investigating how CBD may help with them. The first is autoimmune disorders. Lupus, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Crohn’s, HIV and AIDS, and Fibromyalgia are just a few of over 80 known autoimmune disorders and diseases.
In each of these cases, the disease causes the immune system to be hyperactive and attack tissues cells or organs that are healthy and should be left alone. This weakens normal bodily functions and can be life-threatening. The immunosuppressant role that CBD helps activate calms down and works to regulate the immune system to identify the healthy tissue and leave it alone correctly.
Recent studies show that the biological balance that the endocannabinoid system works to maintain keeps the immune system running in the correct way rather than dampening all of its functions.
Half of all people will fight cancer at some point in their lives. Cancer cells fool your white blood cells, making them think that the cancer is a healthy cell and that it should be protected. Once this happens, the tumor is free to spread unhindered. While research is far from being complete, it appears that THC and CBD may help the immune system see through cancer cell defenses. This would allow them to be quarantined naturally and disposed of as they should be.
There are mixed results when looking at CBD and the immune system, which is the newest and best alternative to chemotherapy.
One study found CVD to have a negative or neutral effect while some patients report significant benefits from a low dose CBD rich product along with immunotherapy.
So while the verdict may still be pending on CBD oil, it is showing great promise as treatment for strengthening our immune system and to combat many common autoimmune disorders.
