Sleep deprivation is a big problem happening within the United States that can significantly impact your health. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that 30% of American adults are affected by sleep deprivation and are sleeping less than 6 hours or less a day. Americans who are less likely to get a proper night’s sleep are those who are working more than 40 hours a week. Sleep deprivation is definitely damaging to an individual’s health and dangerous for workers because they have an increased risk of injuries. So what’s the solution? Is there anything out there that can help with sleep deprivation?
You may have seen CBD for sale almost everywhere you go now. With all the new buzz going on about the possible benefits CBD can provide, one of the most common uses for CBD is for a good night’s sleep.
CBD has been a booming topic in the United States today and people are using the cannabinoid as an effective sleep aid. A recent Consumer Reports survey, around 10% of Americans who have used cannabidiol said they use it for sleep. A majority of these people who use CBD for sleep have reported it works as an effective sleep aid! A recent study has shown that CBD may be able to help with their short term sleep problems and there is growing scientific research supporting the use of CBD as a sleep aid.
Some research is showing that CBD interacts with receptors in the brain that control the body’s daily sleep/wake cycles according to the journal Current Psychiatry Reports. This is because CBD can ease anxiety and pain that are related to making it harder for an individual to fall and or stay asleep.
The Kaiser-Permanente health insurance company did a study in January with Colorado researchers that looked at 72 patients’ health records that were treated with CBD for either anxiety or poor sleep. This was a 3-month study that showed that the patients’ anxiety levels decreased, even for the patients who were experiencing poor sleep. Scott Shannon, the study’s main author and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado, thought that some people are getting better sleep with CBD because they are worried less about their sleep issues. Scientists have some biological explanations with recent studies on how cannabis compounds like CBD interact throughout the body to the receptors in the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system affects the body’s physiological functions, including sleep and anxiety, which are related to the body’s sleep/wake cycle. CBD interacts with a receptor in the brain that is known to be in control of anxiety.
You should definitely speak with your doctor first to see if they recommend trying out CBD. The benefits for CBD helping as a sleep aid are still unclear but show very few side effects. If other known sleep therapies have not been working for you, CBD would be a good alternative plant medicine to try. CBD may work better for anxiety than sleep, but there is evidence showing CBD’s ability to help you fall asleep because it eases your anxiety and relaxes you.
